CALGARY - Former NHL player Ryan Walter will coach the Canadian women's hockey team at this year's world championship in April.

It will be Walter's second stint with the team after coaching the women to victory at November's Four Nations Cup in St. John's, N.L.

Canada defeated the U.S. 3-2 in overtime to win the tournament.

The women's world championship will be held April 16-25 in Zurich and Winterthur, Switzerland. The U.S. has won two straight world titles, beating Canada in the finals in 2008 and 2009.

Walter played for the Washington Capitals, Montreal Canadiens and Vancouver Canucks during his playing career.

The 52-year-old was an assistant coach of the Canucks last season.
