'He's building community': Video of joyful Surrey school crossing guard goes viral
A video showcasing a well-liked Surrey school crossing guard has been viewed tens of thousands of times on social media.
The video features Terrance Pitts, a crossing guard for Latimer Road Elementary School.
Drive by 60 Avenue and 192 Street in Surrey on any morning or afternoon when school is in session, and you'll see Pitts twirling his stop sign, waving at passing cars and greeting everyone he meets with a kind word and a friendly smile.
Parents and school staff tell CTV News he’s become a familiar face in the neighbourhood, well-known for that constant smile and positive energy.
“He's building connections and building community,” said Susan Yip, Latimer Road Elementary School principal.
“We know that relationships is everything for kids, especially, and the families that come to our school. And I think that's what he's doing. He's the first face that they see when they come to school in the morning.”
Pitts has worked as a crossing guard for six years. He was encouraged to apply by his stepdad and says working is the highlight of his day.
“It just brightens my day,” said Pitts. “I just love helping out, making a smile. Just making a difference pretty much every day, you know?”
He works every morning and afternoon, often receiving friendly honks and waves from people driving through the intersection. He tells CTV News he hasn’t missed a shift since he started the job.
“It’s true. In six years, he's never called in sick once,” said Yip. “So we are very lucky.”
“I just love this job so much that I never, ever want to stay home,” said Pitts.
Pitts says he hopes his energy brings more positivity to his community.
