Children are the most likely to suffer fireworks-related injuries, so Vancouver police have a few tips to share about keeping your holiday light displays safe this Halloween:
- Always plant explosives in a pail of sand or dirt
- Stand far back from explosions
- Never hold fireworks in your hand, or point at people, animals or buildings
- Ensure all clothing and costumes worn while igniting fireworks are non-flammable
- Make sure your firework is totally out before you pick it up
Also, always keep a pail or hose nearby in case there are any sparks or small fires. Fireworks should only be handled by adults.
There are some cities that do not allow fireworks displays whatsoever so be sure to check with your local city hall to make sure it's allowed.
In Vancouver, family fireworks, not including firecrackers, can only be purchased, possessed and discharged with a permit issued from the fire chief from Oct. 25 to 31.
The person who obtains the permit must be over the age of 19 and pass an online fire safety quiz.
