Firefighters are calling a blaze that broke out at the King’s Way Church of God in East Vancouver Wednesday suspicious.

The fire was sparked around 11:30 a.m. toward the back of the church, which is located at the corner of East 17th Avenue and Prince Albert Street.

Viewer video submitted to CTV News shows flames burning at a staircase on the side of the building.

Battalion Chief Rod MacDonald said the building was empty when the blaze started, and firefighters managed to extinguish it before it did extensive damage.

“The crews here did a very good job with getting here quickly and getting water under the fire, that’s just crucial for these older structures,” MacDonald said.

The cause is still being investigated, and it’s unclear whether the fire started inside or outside the building.
