A B.C. Ferries trip took a dramatic turn Friday night, as the vessel made a detour to rescue a man from a sinking ship.

The 30-year-old sent a distress call after his powerboat boat started taking in water west of Bowen Island, B.C.

He had reportedly been taking a nap when he was awoken by his vessel's bilge alarm.

Ferry spokeswoman Deborah Marshall says the man abandoned his boat and held on to a crate until he was rescued by workers from the Queen of Cowitchan ferry sailing from Nanaimo.

The 11.5-metre powerboat was nearly two-thirds submerged by the time the rescue craft reached him. A tugboat towing a barge also stopped to help.

Ferry workers performed CPR on the man until he was taken by the coast guard hovercraft.

The man was transported to hospital and treated for hypothermia - but is said to be in good condition.
