A man is dead and the Lions Gate Bridge is closed in both directions after a fatal motorcycle accident Monday evening, Vancouver police say.

A 27-year-old man riding a motorcycle struck a northbound SUV at around 5:50 p.m. Monday, according to Sgt. Randy Fincham.

The man died at the scene as a result of his injuries, Fincham said.

Emergency crews were at the scene of the accident, where an overturned motorcycle could be seen near what looked to be a body underneath of a tarp.

The victim's identity has not been confirmed pending next-of-kin notification.

The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and is cooperating with police, Fincham said.

The accident caused major traffic delays for commuters at the end of the long weekend.

The bridge was expected to be closed for several more hours as an investigation continued.
