An Edmonton family bound for a California getaway is dead after their SUV slid into an oncoming tractor trailer on an icy B.C. highway Wednesday night.

The crash occurred at around 8:30 p.m. on Highway 5 near Barriere, a small town located about an hour north of Kamloops.

Investigators say the family was headed southbound when the driver lost control of their Suzuki Grand Vitara and slipped into the path of the oncoming trailer.

RCMP Central Interior Traffic Services and Barriere RCMP arrived on scene to find the family, including a three-year-old girl, her seven-year-old brother and their parents, dead.

"It is a devastating reminder for drivers to exercise caution on the roadways and to ensure their vehicles are prepared for the winter conditions," said Staff Sgt. Steve Frayne in a release.

The driver of the trailer only received minor injuries.

The identities of the victims are being withheld until next of kin is notified.

Highway 5 was closed for several hours, but Central Interior Traffic Services confirms it has been reopened to traffic.
