The names of an Edmonton family that died in a car crash on an icy B.C. road Wednesday night have been released.
Investigators said the crash happened around 8:30 p.m. when Benham Shokri, 47, lost control of his SUV on Highway 5 near Barriere, a small town located about an hour north of Kamloops.
His 37-year-old wife Shirin Hamedi Khorasani was beside him and their children, six-year-old Daniel and three-year-old Delina Shokri, were in the backseat of their Suzuki Grand Vitara.
Investigators say the family was headed southbound when the vehicle slipped into the path of the oncoming trailer.
The driver of the trailer only received minor injuries but the family died on impact.
Police said that Shokri had accepted a job in California and the family was on their way to start their new lives in the Golden State.
The medical examiner's office told CTV News it took some time to notify next-of-kin, as the family is originally from Iran, and didn't appear to have any family in Edmonton.
"It is a devastating reminder for drivers to exercise caution on the roadways and to ensure their vehicles are prepared for the winter conditions," said Staff Sgt. Steve Frayne in a release Thursday.
