Vancouver police say an officer needed his Taser to stop a driver who was using a stolen car as a battering ram in hopes of escaping from a police blockade.

Constable Lindsey Houghton says members of the Emergency Response Team had blocked a suspected stolen car in a lane at West 12th Avenue and Ontario Street Wednesday afternoon.

But instead of stopping, the driver ignored repeated warnings and began slamming his car into a police SUV -- until officers smashed the vehicle windows and the man was jolted by a Taser.

Another man and woman in the car were arrested without incident and the driver -- who police believe was high on drugs -- was taken to hospital for a checkup.
