Police are investigating after a body was discovered on Harwood Island, near Powell River, B.C. on Sunday.

Sgt. Rod Wiebe said the badly decomposed body was found on the shore by visiting boaters, who immediately called police.

Members of Powell River RCMP were unable to identify the body or determine whether the death is considered suspicious.

Forensic experts from the BC Coroners Service will now analyze the remains to identify age, sex and race of the body, Wiebe said.

Wiebe said Harwood Island is part of the Sliammon First Nation who use the uninhabited island for celebrations and gatherings. It is located about five nautical miles from Powell River.
