A park patrolman, who was stabbed while trying to break-up a deadly campground fight near Chilliwack, B.C. last weekend, is being hailed as a hero.

Ryan Litchfield was unable to save 19-year-old Cody Gottschalk, who died when a fight broke out between two groups of men at the Cultus Lake campground on the Victoria Day long weekend.

But park officials say Litchfield's actions likely prevented a second person from dying that night.

On the night of the stabbing, Litchfield was called to the beach where two groups of young men had gathered. He persuaded the men to leave. However, the two groups exchanged words as they walked away and a fight broke out.

Instead of backing away, he put himself in harm's way by getting between the attacker and the first stabbing victim.

"I kicked the guy who was stabbing the other individual off and started to administer first aid," he told CTV News.

But then he noticed a second man being attacked and Litchfield went after the man wielding the knife.

"He basically turned on me after I pushed him away," he explained. "I was able to put my arm up. He got me in the arm (with the knife) and then he took off."

Litchfield didn't realize he had been stabbled until he went to help Gottschalk. He peformed CPR for 15 minutes on the injured teen, but couldn't save him.

Litchfield is just one of several park workers who tried to help that night.

"Their actions, as far as I'm concerned, were very heroic and there's no doubt their actions prevented the loss of further life," said Joe Depaulo of Cultus Lake Park Patrol.

For his part, Litchfield dismisses any suggestions that what he did was heroic. In fact, he wishes he could have done more.

"I don't think I did anything that anybody else wouldn't have done in the same situation," he said.

Friends of the teenager who died say Gottschalk was talking about his dreams for the future shortly before the fight started.

"He didn't deserve this. He had so much going for him," said Ashley Bartyik, the victim's cousin. "He loved his family."

Two Chilliwack, B.C. men -- Adam Derek Philips, 18, and Justin Wayne Lennard, 19 -- are facing a series of charges, including second-degree murder, assault with a weapon, aggravated assault, assault causing bodily harm and possession of a weapon.

Another man, 22-year-old Nathan John Simmons of Chilliwack, has been charged with one count of aggravated assault and one count of assault causing bodily harm.

Gottschalk's grieving family is planning a memorial on Sunday.
