"The decision to air the Paralympic Games Opening Ceremony on CTV British Columbia was made due to the huge local appetite for the games," said Tom Haberstroh, VP & General Manger of CTV British Columbia.

"Vancouver is extremely engaged in the Games and we felt there was enough interest to air the ceremony twice in this market."

Viewers outside B.C. saw their regular programming on Friday night, though the International Paralympic Committee carried the ceremony live on its website, www.ParalympicSport.tv.

The ceremony at B.C. Place featured more than 5,000 performers, many of whom are disabled and were wearing specially-modified costumes to account for the equipment they use for mobility. Two cauldrons were lit for the ceremony – one outdoors on the Vancouver waterfront and another in Whistler, the location of the closing ceremony.
