With so many brands of interior paint to choose from, how can you pick the best product for your project?

Consumer Reports tested dozens of paints for qualities like coverage, how smooth the finish is, how well it holds up over time and how easily it cleans.

The top-rated paint for the second year running was Behr Premium Plus Ultra Satin from Home Depot at $45.97 for a gallon. Benjamin Moore Regal Eggshell ($64.99) and Behr Premium Plus Satin ($33.97) were tied for second.

The magazine recommends the Behr Premium Plus Satin paint for its high scores and low price.

Vince Smith at Cloverdale Paint says that a good paint store will ask for the details of your project before helping you pick out a brand.

"You need to know the sheen level and the usage of the paint," he told CTV News.

"The VOC [volatile organic compound] content is very important if you have children or older people who are environmentally sensitive.'

Cloverdale Paint is Canadian and wasn't included in the Consumer Reports tests, but Smith said, "Our chemists are the top end and we have every confidence in all our products."

Cloverdale caters to contractors, who tend to want a paint that goes on easily, dries quickly between quotes and hides touch-ups.

Consumer Reports' John Galeotafiore says the best paints for contractors aren't always the best choices for amateur painters.

"They also develop a relationship with the retailer that sometimes makes it hard to switch brands," he said.

The best advice is to ask your contractor which paint they prefer, and why. They often get discounts at certain stores, but in the end, it's your house and your walls.
