The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team is asking the public's help in determining how long charred human remains found Saturday afternoon in a Surrey ravine had been in the area.

The remains were discovered in the area of 138 Street and 93A Avenue at around 12:40 p.m. by a father and daughter out for a walk.

"The scene that they saw there was pretty horrific," Cpl. Dale Carr said. Responding officers were unable to determine the deceased's gender or a likely cause of death, he added.

"It certainly, on the outside, looks like perhaps the fire had something to do with it, but … we're going to wait for autopsy to make that determination," Carr said.

Police are now trying to narrow down a time frame of how long the remains may have been at the scene. Investigators are asking anyone who was in the area in the last few days to contact them immediately.

"We have no idea how long the body has been there," Carr said. "We're really interested in speaking to anybody whose been through that trail system."

A large area was cordoned off on Saturday and guarded overnight. Investigators returned Sunday morning to gather additional evidence and canvass neighbours.

Anyone with information is asked to call the IHIT tip line at 1-877-551-IHIT or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
