Update: Police have confirmed the suspects arrested in New Westminster Monday evening are facing charges in connection with a double homicide in East Vancouver over the weekend.

Previous story: A suspect tried fleeing from police during a dramatic takedown in New Westminster Monday evening, despite already having been placed in handcuffs.

Few details about the incident have been confirmed, but it appears to have started with a collision on 8th Avenue that left a white car pinned between two other vehicles, including an unmarked police cruiser.

Witnesses who live in the neighbourhood said they saw two men attempting to run away from the scene.

“Saw a guy coming down the hill. The police were obviously on him but then they put the dog on him, and he was getting attacked by the dog right out front of our house,” one woman said. “It’s a little bit scary with two young children.”

CTV News filmed one suspect sprinting from police with his hands handcuffed behind his back. He was eventually caught and taken into custody.

At least three people were arrested in total.

Though the incident happened in New Westminster, the file is being handled by the Vancouver Police Department.

Authorities described the situation as delicate on Monday, but have not revealed anything about what prompted the arrests. More information is expected to be released on Tuesday.
