Every Friday, Lynda Steele dips into the viewer mailbag to answer your questions. This week, Steele on Your Side, takes a closer look at road rules and how to donate your old vehicle to charity.

Merging rules

Tessa wrote CTV News to ask about road merging protocol. She was annoyed by a motorist who swerved around stopped vehicles and waited until the very last minute to merge in a construction zone.  She wants to know if that's legal.

The BC Motor Vehicle Services Act says driving around merging cars is illegal but only if you cross a solid line. If you cross the solid line on the side of the road that counts as an illegal maneuver.

RCMP Traffic Services says it's best to use all lanes to keep things moving in high traffic and to be courteous at merging points. That means alternating cars when you merge.

Donating a car to charity

Chantal wrote to ask if there's a non-profit organization that will pick up and take away old cars.

There a couple of businesses on the Lower Mainland that will donate your old vehicle to charity. The first is called Donate a Car Canada. It arranges to have your vehicle picked up at no cost. The company will take care of selling or recycling your old vehicle and will then send a cheque to the charity of your choice.

The charity will then send you a tax deductible receipt.

Another local business that works in a similar way is called The Charity Car Program.
