Police say the man sprayed with gunfire in an underground parking lot in Burnaby, B.C., Tuesday night is a well-known gangster.

A Metro Vancouver RCMP source close to the investigation confirms to CTV the shooting victim is Parminder "Peter" Adiwal, who has been known to a leader of the Independent Soldiers gang.

Adiwal remains in hospital in serious condition after being shot multiple times near a car in an apartment complex in the 4100-block of Dawson Street in the Vancouver suburb.

Cpl. Alexandra Mulvihill of the Burnaby RCMP says the incident appears targeted and police are currently interviewing witnesses from the scene.

"[It] sounded like firecrackers. Saw a black SUV speed off from the area. Someone shouting for help from the parking lot. Someone called 911," witness Alon Goldberg said.

Police are now on the lookout for a dark-coloured SUV, as well as a van seen leaving the area. Witnesses say it looked like a U-Haul.

There have been more than 47 shootings in Metro Vancouver in 2009 -- more than a dozen fatal.
