British Columbians over the age of 40 want their sex to be spontaneous, and are more likely than baby boomers in the rest of the country to enjoy an afternoon romp in the bedroom, according to a new survey.

A poll of 1,000 Canadians over 40 conducted on behalf of the makers of the erectile dysfunction drug, Cialias, found that only 13 per cent prefer a little afternoon delight -- except for in B.C., where 18 per cent like it while the sun is still shining.

The majority of Canadians -- 60 per cent -- prefer a little action in the nighttime, while 27 per cent liked their nooky in the morning.

"Couples are wanting an exciting sex life. They don't just want a hum-drum, boring sex life -- they're wanting adventure, they're wanting to be on the edge sometimes," Vancouver sex therapist David McKenzie told CTV News.

"We are children of the sexual revolution."

In fact, 80 per cent of Canadians surveyed said that spontaneity is key to maintaining a good sex life. Sixty per cent said they hoped for spontaneous sex, but only 44 per cent boasted on having a spontaneous sex life.

The survey found that tiredness, work, medical issues like erectile dysfunction and inability to get partners alone were the biggest barriers to getting it on.

But 61 per cent of Canadians said sex gets better with age, a phenomenon that McKenzie believes is driven by women.

"In couples over 40, there's tending to be more of a trend of females having much more desire than males," he said.

"As men get older and their sexual functioning is not as robust as it was when they were 25, they will start to look at more emotional ways of connecting -- as we call it, more outercourse."
