Boy, 8, killed in crash involving snow plow on B.C.'s icy Highway 3
An eight-year-old boy has died following a crash between a snow plow dump truck and a car on B.C.'s Highway 3.
The crash occurred just outside of Castlegar, in B.C.’s West Kootenay region, just after 8 a.m. Saturday morning, said BC Highway Patrol in a release issued Tuesday.
The boy was travelling with his five-year-old brother and their 44-year-old stepdad in a Kia SUV during a wintry storm that had brought freezing rain and cold and icy conditions to the area.
On the icy roads, the car collided with the dump truck, causing it to spin away and hit a pedestrian who had been helping a separate vehicle that had driven into a ditch, said police.
The boy’s stepdad and brother, all from Nelson, received minor physical injuries as a result of the crash. The pedestrian, a 57-year-old man from Castlegar, received life-threatening injuries.
The driver of the snow plow dump truck, a 65-year-old man from the Castlegar area, appeared to be left unhurt, said police.
Anyone who may have witnessed the incident is asked to call the Nelson BC Highway Patrol at 250-354-5180.
“We are looking for dash camera video or people who may have seen the green Kia or the yellow snow plow dump truck in the moments leading up to the crash,” said Cpl. Michael McLaughlin, in the release.
