Mounties are investigating after a body was found in an abandoned car in New Westminster.

Police received a call at around 10 a.m. Friday morning that a car had been abandoned in an outdoor parking lot next to an apartment building on Royal Avenue and 3rd Street.

When police arrived and searched the vehicle they found a body inside. Officers determined the death was suspicious, and the Integrated Homicide Investigative Team was called in to take over.

Cpl. Dale Carr said investigators were not able to immediately determine the gender of the deceased, and would not be revealing where the body was found in the car.

"We're not prepared at this time to disclose the location of the body," Carr said. "We do know it's deceased human remains that is under suspicious circumstances."

Police have not made any connection to gangs, drugs or organized crime.

An autopsy is expected to take place early next week.
