WINNIPEG -

The Transportation Safety Board says hot-air balloons should provide the same level of safety as other passenger-carrying aircraft in Canada.

The board also suggests the balloons should have an emergency fuel shutoff that can be quickly deployed during hard landings or critical situations.

The recommendations stem from an investigation into the crash-landing of a hot-air balloon north of Winnipeg last August that sent two people to hospital.

Witnesses said the balloon, with a dozen passengers, bounced six times before the basket flipped upside down and burst into flames.

Another balloon crash last August in Surrey, B.C., killed two people and injured 11.
