An 18-year-old bull rider from the Okanagan died after being trampled during a rodeo in Valemount, B.C., on Friday night.

Makwala Derickson-Hall, an Okanagan First Nations member from Westbank-Oliver, was bucked off his bull and stomped on at the annual Canoe Mountain Rodeo shortly before 8 p.m.

Roughly 200 rodeo spectators were watching when the horrific incident took place.

He managed to stand up momentarily before collapsing. RCMP Cpl. Annie Linteau said he was rushed to a local medical facility, but died of his injuries shortly after.

The RCMP "E" Division released his name and band status at his family's request.

Derickson-Hall was a member of the Mount Boucherie Secondary Rodeo Team and a championship rider. He was preparing to ride in the National High School Finals Rodeo in Wyoming later this month.

A BC Coroners Service investigation into his death has not yet been completed.
