A 36-year-old single mom from Metro Vancouver is starting off the New Year almost three-and-a-half million dollars richer.

Jessica Williams became Canada’s first Lotto 6/49 winner of the year this week with a ticket she bought at a Shoppers Drug Mart in her hometown of Port Coquitlam.

She was handed her $3.46 million jackpot, along with an oversized novelty cheque for the same amount at the BC Lottery Corporation office in Vancouver Friday.

“It’s so crazy. I can’t feel my legs. I don’t know what’s going on right now,” said Williams, who was accompanied by her father, son and brother.

Williams learned she was the winner Thursday morning after using a gas station’s self-serve ticket-checker on her way to work.

“I put the ticket in and I was waiting for it to say not a winner,” she said. “All these numbers came up and I just grabbed the ticket and ran to my car.”

Williams, an account manager for a nutrition company, said it’s too soon to say how she’ll spend her money or whether she’ll quit her job, but that one thing is certain: things are about to change for her and her family.

“Probably [buy] a new car, maybe a condo. I don’t know, we’ve got lots to talk about,” Williams said.
