Penny has been a familiar face to CTV News Vancouver viewers since 2010. She also hosts and produces the CTV News network’s first original podcast, BTS with CTV News Vancouver.
Penny began her career in radio as a weekend news anchor for Rogers in the Fraser Valley before moving to CKNW radio for four years, where she covered everything from the 2010 Olympics to high-profile court and politics stories. She was also one of the key figures reporting from the thick of the chaos during the 2011 Stanley Cup Riot.
When she made the switch to CTV, Penny quickly stood out with her compelling storytelling, scoops, and compassionate portrayal of complex stories. She has been a key figure in the station’s coverage of major events ever since — from municipal elections to the legislature spending scandal — but has also been known to suit up for unconventional assignments like flying a Boeing F-18 Super Hornet.
Inspired by the many challenges faced by herself and the field crews covering the historic 2017 wildfire season, Penny took the leap into podcasting in the spring of 2018, launching BTS with CTV News Vancouver, a podcast taking listeners behind the scenes and behind the stories from the station's busy newsroom. With her fellow reporters, anchors, producers, technical colleagues and occasional guests from outside the station, Penny dives into the complex ethical issues, technical challenges and even the emotional minefields CTV journalists tackle to bring their vibrant stories to air.
Penny graduated with Honours from BCIT’s Broadcast Journalism program in 2008, where she was awarded the Canadian Millennium Excellence Entrance Award. She earned a Bachelor of Arts (First Class) from UBC in 2002, majoring in anthropology and minored in sociology.
Known as one of the station’s resident nerds, Penny is often overheard discussing the latest sci-fi novel or film and is known to produce dazzling results in the kitchen from local farms and suppliers. Having grown up in Maple Ridge, Penny now lives in Vancouver, but is always planning her next adventure overseas; between travels, she is delighted with the discovery of new cafes and craft breweries.
