A 39-year-old inmate died this week at a medium-security federal prison in B.C.'s Fraser Valley. He was less than a year into a roughly three-year sentence.

The Correctional Service of Canada announced the death in a statement Friday, saying inmate Sean Duffy had died in custody at Matsqui Institution.

The service did not elaborate on the suspected cause of Duffy's death, nor the offences for which he was sentenced.

His sentence of three years, four months and two days commenced on Nov. 24, 2023, according to the CSC, which added that his next of kin has been notified.

"As in all cases involving the death of an inmate, the Correctional Service of Canada will review the circumstances," the agency's statement reads.

"CSC policy requires that the police and the coroner be notified."
