Police are warning drivers to be extra careful on Metro Vancouver's drenched roads after three people were killed in a series of crashes beginning Thursday night.

Authorities haven't confirmed that wet weather was a factor in any of the collisions, but said it probably played a role in at least one of them – a pickup truck crash that closed part of the busy Lougheed Highway in Burnaby for several hours early Friday morning.

"It's still in the early stages of the investigation, however, given the rain this morning, it's quite likely the road conditions played a factor," said Cpl. Brett Cunningham of the Burnaby RCMP.

The pickup crashed between Underhill Avenue and Lake City Way around 1:30 a.m., sending the vehicle into a ditch and leaving the driver dead and two passengers in hospital.

Police said the survivors' injuries are serious but not life-threatening.

In nearby Surrey, a pedestrian was killed in a hit-and-run while trying to cross Highway 10 near 152nd Street shortly before 9 p.m.

It was dark and rainy out, and police said the victim – a man in his 50s – was not at a marked crosswalk at the time.

He was struck by two vehicles: a white SUV with a "boxy" appearance that continued driving, and a second vehicle that was close behind.

The driver of the second vehicle remained at the scene and is co-operating with investigators.

Cpl. Elenore Sturko of Surrey RCMP said they're hoping to speak to any potential witnesses, or anyone who has dashcam video taken in the area around the time of the collision.

About two hours earlier, there was another single-vehicle crash on Highway 17 in Delta that left one person dead.

The highway was closed near Deltaport Way for several hours as crews responded to the accident, causing major delays getting to and from Tsawwassen.
