One young woman is dead and three other people are injured after a crash in Mission overnight Friday night.

Police said the four people were leaving a gathering in muddy conditions on Burma Road in the early hours of Saturday morning, when the driver of the vehicle missed a turn and hit a tree. The woman who died was in the back seat of the 1991 Nissan Sentra, police said.

One man was airlifted to hospital in serious condition and two other men were taken to hospital by ambulance with non life-threatening injuries.

Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash, but speed was, police said.

“We suspect they were travelling too fast for the conditions,” said Const. Dale Wagner of Mission RCMP.

Burma Road is a gravel road full of twists and turns, and it was pouring rain at the time of the crash.

Mike Kimber rides his bicycle on the road regularly. He told CTV News the road is safe, “if you behave yourself.”

“It’s usually packed down pretty hard, but after a rain it’s greasy and there’s a lot of loose surface,” he said. “In the dark if you come too quickly around the corner, I don’t care how good your brakes are, there’s nothing for your rubber to grab. You’re sliding.”
