WorkSafe BC is investigating after a worker was struck by a falling object at a downtown Vancouver construction site Tuesday afternoon.

The worker, whose name hasn’t been released, was hit by a plummeting beam or a piece of scaffolding at the Telus Garden worksite on Richards Street, WorkSafe said.

The individual was taken to hospital with what were initially reported to be critical injuries. A spokeswoman at Westbank, a developer working on the Telus project, said the worker was in stable condition as of Tuesday evening.

Two WorkSafe officers were sent to the scene to investigate along with Vancouver police.

The accident temporarily shut down traffic on Richards between Robson and Georgia streets.

Telus's $750 million Garden project is scheduled to be completed in 2015, and will act as the company's national headquarters. The project includes a 22-storey office tower and 44-storey residential tower.
