Vancouver police are investigating an early morning sex assault near the University of British Columbia campus that left a woman with minor injuries.

Const. Brian Montague said a 30-year-old woman was grabbed and thrown to the ground before she was sexually assaulted in the area of West 16th Avenue near Discovery Street at around 6:30 a.m. Thursday.

The woman suffered minor injuries and was "extremely distraught and shaken" by the attack, police said.

Video shows a police dog searching around the exterior of homes in the area. A suspect has not been found and no arrests have been made.

It’s still early in the investigation and a suspect description has not been provided. Police are asking any witnesses to contact them at 604-717-0600 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.

The incident took place several kilometres from the UBC campus, where students have been on edge following a series of sex assaults over the last two years.

The latest attack happened a week ago, when a young woman was grabbed by her neck near a lobby of Totem Park Residence and dragged to a poorly lit area.

She managed to escape. The suspect was later arrested and has been charged with attempted sexual assault and assault of a police officer.
