One woman is dead and a man in hospital after a shooting at a house party in the Guildford area of Surrey.

RCMP were called to a home in the 10200-block of 152A Street around 4 a.m. Saturday after receiving reports of shots fired.

Inside officers found a woman in severe medical distress. She died at the scene.

Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said an adult male was also injured.

"[There were] a number of other people in the residence, along with another person suffering from what appeared to be gunshot-related injuries," Carr said.

The injured man was transported to hospital. He is in serious condition and expected to undergo surgery sometime Saturday.

Carr said the building is used as an underground nightclub.

"We haven't established whether it was a booze can, but it's a place where people return to party after they were at the bar," he said.

Neighbours told CTV News the owners of the home applied to turn it into a nightclub, but were rejected. Before that, they say it operated as a daycare.

Members of the Surrey RCMP and IHIT cordoned off the scene and swept the area. A police dog team was dispatched to gather evidence.

It is still unclear if the incident began in the home. Carr said investigators hope to paint a clearer picture after speaking with witnesses inside the residence.

"Did it start inside and go inside or is this something where people just barged in? We don't know of this information at this point."

Investigators are still trying to confirm the identities of the injured man and the deceased woman. An autopsy is expected Monday. Carr said the investigation is still in its early stages.

"We have a great deal of work ahead of us."
