The chief constable of West Vancouver, Kash Heed, resigned on Monday, the District of West Vancouver has confirmed.

West Vancouver Mayor Pamela Goldsmith-Jones says Inspector Jim Almas, a 28-year veteran, will serve as acting chief until a successor is found.

Heed was appointed the 11th chief constable for West Vancouver in August 2007. On the police department's website, he is described as "a strong advocate for transparent policing that embraces partnership, problem solving, and prevention."

Heed said in a press release it had been an honour to serve the people of West Vancouver and he leaves the department in good shape.

Heed has previously said he supported a more regional approach to fighting gang violence.

Heed holds a master's degree from the school of criminology at Simon Fraser University, and a bachelor's degree in leadership in public safety from SFU.
