Fire officials in West Vancouver have issued a warning to smokers after four brush fires were sparked within hours in the community.

All the incidents appear to have been started by discarded cigarettes, and with tinder dry conditions, officials fear there will be more.

Asst. Fire Chief Jeff Bush is pleading for smokers to dispose of their cigarettes and ashes safely, and asking residents to call 911 immediately if they see smoke.

All of the fires were small and extinguished quickly, but Bush says it could have been much worse, given the heat wave gripping the South Coast.

Environment Canada issued a special weather statement for the region, saying a ridge of high pressure will send the temperature to about 15 degrees above normal.
