A new Twitter account has been set up to showcase and shame the most atrocious parking practices in Vancouver.

Some of the pictures submitted to YVR’s Worst Parking show cars, trucks and SUVS carelessly left across multiple spaces. Others were parked right on the curb, or so far from it they blocked other drivers.

“See somebody parked like an idiot? Tweet us a pic and tell your friends!” the account description reads.

It’s the third Twitter handle set up by Alberta resident Brian Labelle, who first set his sights on bad parkers in Edmonton and Calgary, and hopes to expand to even more Canadian cities soon.

“Hopefully then we can get the truly spectacular-terrible park jobs and just showcase them across the country,” Labelle said.

The Vancouver account sent its first tweet less than a week ago, and has already amassed nearly 2,000 followers.

Some on social media have questioned the usefulness publicly shaming drivers, but Labelle said he doesn’t feel bad shining the spotlight on parking offences.

“People just like to vent,” he said. “[These are] adults that definitely know the rules or should know the rules. I don’t think there’s anything really wrong with that.”

His account isn’t the first to draw attention to bad parking habits in Metro Vancouver. The fan base at Kim Tantongco’s Richmond Learns to Park has ballooned to more than 13,000 people since she launched it in April.

Young Drivers of Canada instructor Ben Simon said in the age of camera phones, drivers have to expect their bad behaviour could end up online.

Even if it doesn’t, Simon said parking isn’t hard enough to justify most of the behaviour seen on YVR’S Worst Parking.

“It really isn’t,” Simon said. “You have to think, parking is a low-speed maneuver.”
