A discussion on whether to keep whales and dolphins in the Vancouver Aquarium is scheduled to resume Monday evening.

More than 130 speakers signed up to talk in a Saturday meeting convened by the Vancouver Park Board but only 48 got a chance to talk.

Aaron Jasper, the chair of the board, says attendees were divided, with about half of the speakers siding against captivity.

Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson has said he favours phasing out the captive program, and city Councillor Adriane Carr has suggested a referendum during this fall's municipal elections.

The aquarium is home to two beluga whales, two Pacific white-sided dolphins and two harbour porpoises but stopped capturing animals from the wild in 1996.
