A drunk driving trial begins today in provincial court in Surrey for the woman accused of hitting and killing four-year-old Alexa Middelaer.

Fifty-seven-year-old Carol Berner is charged with a total of four counts including impaired driving causing death.

She was charged following the May 2008 crash in Delta, B.C., that killed the little girl and seriously injured her aunt.

Middelaer was feeding a horse in a road-side corral when she and her aunt were hit as a car careened across the grass.

Middelaer's death spurred her parents to create awards for B.C. police officers who target drinking drivers.

The province has also unveiled tougher rules to get impaired drivers off the road.
