Two weeks after a sexual assault was reported in a residential area of Richmond, police are saying the assault actually didn't happen.

RCMP were called to investigate an assault that allegedly occurred on Oct. 7, near the Paulik Park community garden.

An 18-year-old reported that a stranger approached her from behind, pushed her to the ground and forcibly assaulted her. Police were told she was eventually able to fight him off and escape.

But on Thursday, officers said an investigation determined that the assault never happened, and that public safety is not at risk.

"We have examined this case with objective eyes and treated it with the utmost sensitivity," Cpl. Dennis Hwang said in a statement.

After what Hwang called a thorough and extensive investigation, officers determined the report was inaccurate.
