Vancouver Coastal Health has issued a swimming advisory for Sunset Beach after finding high levels of E. Coli bacteria in the water there.

Swimmers are advised to stay out of the water for the time being. VCH said in a release that it’s working with partners to monitor the water quality and will reopen the beach to swimming once the bacteria levels have decreased.

High levels of E. Coli in the water dramatically increase the risk of gastro-intestinal illness to swimmers.

VCH issued the advisory on Wednesday afternoon, just hours before the start of the second entry in the annual Festival of Light fireworks competition over English Bay. The other beaches on the bay are still open for swimming.
