Mounties are asking the public to help identify a suspected hit-and-run driver who was caught on camera running a red light shortly after the collision.

A surveillance camera captured a silver, four-door Honda Civic illegally driving through the intersection of 96th Avenue and 128th Street on Monday, not long after an 85-year-old man was struck and left lying on the road blocks away.

The RCMP released an image of the car Wednesday in the hopes that someone will recognize it and come forward.

“We would like to speak to anyone who may have seen the Honda Civic or knows where the car or driver can be located,” Cpl. Bert Paquet said in a release.

Mounties are also urging the driver to do the right thing and contact police.

Investigators believe the Civic is a 2013 to 2015 model, and that it probably sustained damage to its front end during the accident.

The victim was struck around 5:45 p.m. near 92nd Avenue and 127th Street. He suffered serious injuries and was taken to Royal Columbian Hospital, where he remained in stable condition Wednesday.

According to the RCMP, an officer was conducting a traffic stop near the scene of the hit-and-run, and saw a suspect vehicle fleeing the area.

The Mountie tried to stop the car, but the driver managed to escape.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Surrey RCMP detachment at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
