Mounties have arrested a suspect in connection with a shocking, apparently random murder on a Kelowna city bus Thursday night.

The RCMP confirmed the arrest Friday night but said the suspect’s name would not be released unless charges are approved against him.

Witnesses said the victim, a 55-year-old Kelowna man, was stabbed in the neck on a bus that was stopped on Baron Road and Underhill Street around 6:30 p.m.

Onlookers tried in vain to stop the victim’s bleeding, but he died at the scene.

His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Mounties searched the area with help from a police service dog, but were unable to track down a suspect overnight.

On Friday afternoon, the RCMP announced it had identified a suspect believed to be in the Central Okanagan, and officers were trying to track him down.

The investigation is ongoing and anyone with information is asked to call the Kelowna RCMP detachment at 250-762-3300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
