Surrey Mounties are warning secondary students to put their phones away while walking to and from school following a rash of cell phone robberies in recent weeks.

A number of the victims have been local high school students, who had their mobile phones and other personal property stolen.

“Police and the School District recommend parents take this opportunity to speak with their kids about basic safety steps such as not texting and walking, avoiding short cuts, walking with friends, and calling ahead if you are going to be delayed,” said RCMP Cpl. Bert Paquet.

To reduce the risk of becoming the next victim, police also suggest taking down the phone’s serial number, installing a remote GPS phone locator and being discreet when using a smartphone in public.

Anyone with information on the robberies is being asked to contact Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 if they wish to remain anonymous.
