A Surrey neighbourhood is under lockdown Saturday evening as armed police officers negotiate with a male suspect inside a residential home.

Around 10:40 a.m., RCMP responded to a report of an assault and a suspect barricaded inside a home in the 14200-block of Melrose Drive in North Surrey.

Upon arriving at the scene, police located a 27-year-old man who refused to come out of the house and talk to officers.

Police say they are negotiating with the suspect to surrender to police, and that the incident is between people that know each other.

Some residents in the area told CTV News they have been instructed by police not to leave their homes.

A loud noise that sounded like a flashbang was heard during the afternoon, neighbours add.

Mounties say traffic in the area will be closed for several hours while officers obtain judicial authorization to gain entry to the home.

An investigation is ongoing.
