A lockdown in a Surrey nieghbourhood ended Saturday night with the arrest of a man, residents say.

Around 10:40 a.m., RCMP responded to a report of an assault and a suspect barricaded inside a home in the 14200-block of Melrose Drive in North Surrey.

Upon arriving at the scene, police located a 27-year-old man who refused to come out of the house and talk to officers.

Negotiations with the suspect went on for hours as officers tried to get the man to surrender. Images from the scene showed armed officers, police dogs, and heavy ammunition.

Some residents in the area told CTV News they were instructed by police not to leave their homes for most of the afternoon.

A loud noise that sounded like a flashbang was heard during the afternoon, neighbours add.

“We could hear the police yelling in the speaker, ‘Come on out, you need to come out now,’ and we heard bomb sounds,” said one neighbour. “It was something like in the movies, we felt like we were living in a real life action movie.”

Surrey RCMP have not yet indicated if the man was armed or confirmed his arrest, only saying that the incident involved parties known to each other.

Traffic in the area was closed for several hours while officers obtained judicial authorization to gain entry to the home.

An investigation is ongoing.
