Surrey RCMP say an early morning car fire in Surrey may be a case of arson.
Fire crews were called to a home in the 12400-block of 113B Avenue at roughly 5:15 a.m. Saturday for what they were told was a structure fire, said Surrey Fire Department Acting Battalion Chief Ande George.
What they found when they arrived was that it was actually a Jeep parked close to the home that had been fully engulfed in flames.
George said the smoke coming off of the vehicle set off the fire alarm inside the house, alerting the woman who was inside. Crews were able to put the fire out before it spread to the house.
“When it first came in, it was very close to the house,” George said. “If they hadn’t gotten it quickly it could have quite easily gotten into the house.”
Police say the fire appears to be suspicious, though the exact cause is not yet known.
Anyone who witnessed the fire, saw anyone approaching the vehicle before the fire, or saw anyone fleeing from the area after the fire began is asked to call Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or to call Crimestoppers.
