Police in Coquitlam are searching for a driver after a teen was injured in a hit-and-run last week.

The teen was hit in the intersection of Coquitlam Avenue and Vincent Street in Port Coquitlam on the afternoon of May 16, RCMP said in a statement on Tuesday.

The 16-year-old was taken to hospital for minor injuries, and is expected to make a full recovery.

"Had it not been for the victim wearing his helmet, the injuries sustained would have been life threatening," Const. Jamie Phillipson said in the statement.

The driver of the vehicle, described as a four-door red sedan, "fled the scene immediately," police said. The victim told officers that the vehicle had an "N" decal on the rear.

"There's absolutely no justifiable reason why someone would leave a human being lying in the middle of the street after hitting them with their car," Phillipson said.

Anyone with more information is asked to contact police at 604-945-1550, or to call Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
