Simon Fraser University's Burnaby campus was closed and all exams were cancelled on Saturday from 3 p.m. onwards due to “increasing concerns related to weather and road conditions.”

Students writing exams that start at 3:30 or 7 p.m. will be rescheduled, according to the university in a statement released around 2:30 p.m.

A decision will be made at 6:30 a.m. on Sunday as to whether exams will proceed as scheduled for the rest of the weekend. Surrey and Vancouver campuses remained open.

SFU acknowledged how frustrating the closures were for students.

"We want to acknowledge that examinations are stressful at the best of times, and that the added challenge of having to manage the uncertainties associated with inclement weather and transportation just compounds the stress," the university said in a statement.

"We are also aware that many students have made travel plans at the end of the exam period and have worked hard to prepare for their exams. To that end, we are trying to keep to the exam schedule wherever possible and only cancel when safety concerns dictate."

Tim Hortons in the West Mall was open and provided free coffee for students waiting for transportation, they added, noting TransLink was operating shuttles for the 135 and 145 bus routes.

This isn’t the first time winter weather has caused exam cancellations at SFU this week.

Hundreds of students were Burnaby Mountain Friday after Simon Fraser University abruptly cancelled final exams.

Administrators announced snowy conditions were forcing them to close the campus and cancel all remaining exams shortly before 3 p.m., giving many students roughly half an hour's notice.

That sent a massive crowd of people heading to the bus loops. Unfortunately, TransLink was grappling with the same wintery weather causing delays and detours on many of its routes, including the buses to SFU.
