Vancouver firefighters spent hours working to contain a blaze that broke out in the historic Chinatown neighbourhood Tuesday.

The three alarm fire started in Daisy Garden Restaurant on East Pender Street around noon, sending plumes of smoke into the air that could be seen from across the city.

Fortunately, it appears everyone managed to escape the building unharmed.

About 60 firefighters were dispatched to the stubborn blaze, which officials said spread to the attic and caused the roof to cave in. By Tuesday evening, the scene was still smoldering.

Nearby buildings were also been evacuated but it’s unclear whether they sustained any damage.
