A 24-year-old Surrey man is facing charges after allegedly opening fire on police during an apparent break in Thursday night.

Police were called to a business in the 10600-block of King George Blvd. around 8:45 p.m. after receiving reports of a man trying to pry open a back door.

In a statement released to media, Sgt. Dale Carr said that man “discharged a firearm” at the first officer on the scene as he was about to approach him.

“The officer repositioned himself behind cover and immediately returned fire,” Carr said.

Police say the man dropped his weapon and was taken into custody. A firearm was seized at the scene, Carr added.

The suspect and the officer involved were not injured in the incident, which means the Independent Investigations Office will not be involved in the probe.

A court date for the suspect has not been set.
