A crash that sent a van into Okanagan Lake over the weekend is being blamed on a projectile pumpkin.

Mounties say a 33-year-old West Kelowna man was driving the van down Highway 97 in Peachland early Saturday morning when an object smashed through the driver’s side window.

“The sudden shock created by the impact, accompanied by flying glass and unknown debris caused the man to lose control, ending up in the lake,” Const. Kris Clark said in a statement.

The flying object is believed to have been a pumpkin.

The driver wasn’t hurt, and managed to escape the van before it became fully submerged, but the RCMP said the crash could easily have been deadly.

The person responsible for hurling the pumpkin hasn’t been identified. Mounties are asking anyone with information to contact the Kelowna detachment at 250-768-2880.
