The 31-year-old man arrested in a hit-and-run crash this weekend was driving while prohibited, police say.

The victim was found with life-threatening injuries in a parking lot near the Royal Canadian Legion just after midnight on Saturday.  The 40-year-old, identified by police as Surrey resident Robert Paterson, died on the way to the hospital.

Christopher Griffith, 31, was arrested and is now charged with criminal negligence causing death and driving while prohibited.

The incident occurred near 106 Avenue and 135A Street in Surrey and witnesses said Griffiths narrowly missed other bystanders.

Sgt. Jennifer Pound said public assistance helped identify the driver, and investigators believe the collision was not an accident.

“Evidence retrieved thus far by IHIT supports the theory that this was a deliberate act on the part of the driver,” Pound said.

Griffith will appear in court Tuesday.
