Prince George, B.C., residents ordered from their properties as the Fraser River rose to flood levels earlier this week, are now being allowed return to their homes.

City spokesman Don Schaffer said people in 10 homes on Farrell Street near Paddlewheel Park, were told to leave their properties Thursday as the rising water threatened to close roads.

He said water levels will continue to be watched as there's still a good amount of snow in the hills. However, as of late Saturday morning, the flood level was 9.13 metres.

"That's well below the flood levels,'' Schaffer said.

"Additionally, the flood level readings and the river gauges all the way upstream along the Upper Fraser are all showing drops in water levels, so the Emergency Operations centre decided to rescind the evacuation order.''

Schaffer said while most people look forward to a hot summer, that type of weather is not condusive to avoiding floods.

"Nobody wants to hear that you're hoping for a nice, cool even temperature for spring but really that's what we're looking for, in terms of flood'' he said.

"Everyone wants it to be scorching hot but that would cause water levels to rise.''

Ministry of the Environment officials continue to watch rivers and creeks throughout the province as the winter snowpack continues to melt.
